Dr. SURAJ YENGDE

 

Dr. Suraj Yengde was born into a Dalit family in a small village in Maharashtra, India, in 1984. Growing up, he experienced the discrimination and marginalization that Dalits face in Indian society. Despite these challenges, he was determined to pursue an education and worked hard to excel academically.

He obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sociology from the University of Mumbai and went on to earn a PhD in African Studies from the same university. His doctoral research focused on the experiences of African students in India, which gave him insights into the intersection of caste and race.

After completing his PhD, Dr. Yengde became a leading voice on issues related to caste, race, and social justice in India and beyond. He has written extensively on these topics, publishing articles in major international publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Hindu.

Dr. Yengde's book, "Caste Matters," was published in 2019 and has been widely acclaimed for its insightful analysis of the caste system in India and its relationship to race in the United States. The book has helped to raise awareness of the persistence of caste-based discrimination and inequality, both in India and around the world.

Currently, Dr. Yengde is a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, USA, where he continues his research and advocacy work. He remains a prominent public intellectual and activist, advocating for the rights of Dalits and other marginalized communities, and working to bring about social and political change.
